The Culverhouse’s in Korea - May 2002
Hello!
Now these updates are up and running they have been delegated by Lyra to me! So you’ll see the fact that she is a lady of leisure has done nothing to dampen her controlling spirit! I love it!
So what’s happened since we last wrote, plenty would be the word! Some great some bloody awful!
The house is pretty organised now, but not organised enough it seems as Lyra still manages to find boxes to empty and re-arrange in a new way. I’ve finally got all the PC bits and bobs working, including web-cam so chats can be done when anyone’s ready to stay up late enough!
The telephone is also working properly now but I should point out that the number is +82 2 742 1605 not 1604 like it used to be, I guess this is why nobody has called (or is it!?)
We’ve also been travelling a fair bit, but not together unfortunately, Ly flew back to the UK for nearly 4 weeks for work, which she says she didn’t miss one bit! I missed her though; my cooking skills just aren’t up to much! I also did a few air-miles with a trip to Bangkok and to the USA; all very work orientated unfortunately but did get to spend a couple of hours at Graceland in Memphis which was very cool!
This was the point that things went pear shaped. I returned from Bangkok to find Podgoss the cat in a very poorly state after what looked like a road accident! He was rushed to the Vets (that spoke no English!) and we spent 3 very stressful weeks worrying about whether he was going to make it or not. Anyway 3 operations later and minus his tail Podge returned home one week after Lyra!
Socially we have had some fun, Itaewon has proven it’s self to be a cracking night out with a couple of all-nighters under our belts!! We have also found that celebrating significant days is much bigger as an Expat with great nights out for ANZAC day and St Georges Day, which was complete with good old English Bangers & Mash! The BBQ season is just kicking off so sun-burnt faces and beer guts are waiting to return ( ok so my gut has never gone away).
Ly is now a fully fledged member of a number of Vigilante, sorry, Women’s groups, that meet to discuss, Culture, learn new skills, how they can help Korean Charities, and drink the country dry. Although seriously Ly has begun visiting Orphanages etc to enlighten Korean kids to our wonderful English language ( so we can expect lots of little kids running around shouting ‘major quickie’ etc!! )
Work for me is certainly challenging, and I don’t think I’ve ever had so much to do, but I am now fully in the swing of working as a Foreigner and my teams English improves daily!!
When we last wrote we said we were going to a wedding in Melbourne, well we didn’t go as it all got too complicated, so we planned a trip to Koh Samui in Thailand instead. Podge getting attacked ( which is what we decided had happened to him ) put paid to that! So we have just spent a week at home beginning to see the sights of Seoul and beyond.
We drove across to the East coast for a couple of days ( yes I drive now! ) to Mt Soraksan National Park which was simply breathtaking, a must for those that plan to visit. Next time though I think we’ll fly as it took about 6 hours to drive 250km!
Both Lyra and I are back to the UK soon for work ( and fun! ). So we hope to bump into as many of you as possible. Which brings me onto a reminder…….
Lyra’s Birthday Bash is on Friday 17th May at Hunsbury Hill Centre, Northampton!!!! Fancy Dress as Cowboys & Indians ( and all things related ).
So if you are coming can you please let us know…There will be a BBQ and we need to know how many burgers to buy, so come on pull your fingers out!!!!!!
Well that’s pretty much it I think, hope you’ve enjoyed this window on our world, and we’ll be in touch soon!!
Cheers,
Dan & Ly. xxxxxxx
